Spine and Neck Conditions

Based on the philosophy and principles of Osteopathic Manual Medicine, manual therapy is a distinct art supported by scientific knowledge. Its philosophy embraces the concept that structure influences function. This system of manual diagnostic and treatment techniques includes:

  • soft tissue massage
  • myofascial release
  • joint mobilization/manipulation

These modalities are used to increase mobility in restricted areas of musculoskeletal function, reduce pain, and create an efficient functional state, thereby enhancing the body’s capacity to heal. These techniques are then complemented by muscle balancing (stretching and strengthening), neuromuscular re-education, spinal stabilization training, and sport specific training.

We treat:

  • Lumbar Disc Herniation
  • Lumbo-Sacral Strains and Sprains
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Cervical/Strain
  • Spondyloisthesis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Radiculopathy
  • S-I Joint Dysfunction
  • Laminectomy
  • Discectomy
  • Fusion
  • Scoliotic fixations

How is low back pain treated?

There are many different forms of physical therapy. Acutely, the therapist may focus on decreasing pain with passive physical therapy (modalities). These are considered passive therapies because they are done to the patient. Examples of modalities include:

  • Heat/ice packs
  • TENS units
  • Iontophoresis
  • Ultrasound

One of the strongest therapeutic tools is patient education. The therapists at Body In Balance should be dedicated to educating patients about their condition, treatment strategies, and goals, and how they can best take an active role in maximizing and maintaining treatment gains.

Many times, low back pain can be helped by exercise and keeping good posture while sitting, standing, and sleeping. You can also learn ways to protect your back when bending, lifting, and exercising.  People who are overweight might lessen low back pain by losing weight.  At Body In Balance, we also provide fitness programs, classes and certified trainers for all your wellness needs.  Visit our Fitness page for more information.

In addition to passive therapies, active physical therapy (exercise) is also necessary to rehabilitate the spine. Generally, a patient’s back exercise program should encompass a combination of the following:

  • Manual Therapy Techniques
  • Stretching for back pain exercise
  • Strengthening for back pain exercise
  • Low-impact aerobic conditioning
